Samsung Shrinks Size of New 8Gb Flash Chips
Tuesday, July 18th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Samsung has succeeded in producing a new 8Gb NAND flash memory chip that's 25% smaller than previous designs, according to an IDG News Service story. The breakthrough will benefit not only iPod buyers but also those who use USB flash drives and other diminutive gadgets.
Eight of the chips can be used to create one 8GB device, which Samsung said can hold up to 2,000 MP3 files or 225 minutes of DVD-quality video. Apple is rumored to be preparing an 8GB version of the iPod nano.
The article also noted that Samsung's achievement paves the way for 16GB flash drives to arrive by the end of the year. However, "the tricky issue for device makers now is that they will need to use four controller chips in such a drive, twice as many as in an 8GB model," reporter Dan Nystedt wrote.
