Samsung Ups Flash Memory Ante with 2GB Flash Chips

South Korea Chip maker, Samsung, a major supplier of flash memory to Apple, announced a new flash memory chip today that could more than double the capacity of products like Apple’s new flash memory based iPod nano, according to a news article in LinuxElectrons. The chips could be combined in up to 32GB combinations, which could reshape the music player market that currently relies on hard drives for capacities above a few gigabytes.
"Memory is opening a bold new world in consumer electronics," said Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor business president and CEO, at a press conference in Seoul today. "With cards containing multiple 16Gb flash memory chips (equal to 2GB of memory), you will be able to take your entire music and personal video libraries with you on one small portable device."
The article goes on to note that Samsung plans to put the new memory chip, based on a new 50-nanometer technology, into mass production in the latter half of 2006.
