SanDisk Devours iSheep With ‘Lil’ Monsta’
Thursday, July 6th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Back in May, SanDisk launched a Web site, dubbed "iDon't," that portrayed iPod owners as sheep and touted the company's Sansa line of MP3 players. Noting the "worldwide debate" that surrounded the viral campaign, the company on Friday introduced "Lil' Monsta," a cartoon character who "devours all sorts of digital content," according to SanDisk's press release.
The new, flash-based lilmonsta.com Web site touts features found in the Sansa but lacking in the iPod, such as its microSD expansion card slot, audio recorder, FM tuner, user-replaceable battery, compatibility with a range of online music services, and 1.8-inch LCD screen (the iPod nano has a 1.5-inch display). The Sansa is also cheaper, selling for US$179.99 for the 2GB model, $229.99 for the 4GB version, and $279.99 for the 6GB capacity.
"We think that marketing for MP3 players has been much too serious, and so we are taking a tongue-in-cheek approach," Nelson Chan, SanDisk's executive vice-president and general manager of consumer products and corporate marketing, said in the press release. In that spirit, the idont.com Web site's opening page shows the Lil' Monsta devouring the sheep running across it. It also links to the new site, although it doesn't give any indication that idont.com will be going away.
