SanDisk Thinks it Can Take the nano
Sunday, March 12th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
SanDisk is ready to roll out its latest portable MP3 player, the Sansa e200, and this time the company thinks it has the right mix to de-throne the iPod nano. In an interview with USAToday, SanDisk CEO Eli Harari commented "We feel its far better designed than Apples nano."
The Sansa e200 is Flash memory-based, includes an FM radio tuner, voice recording, an extra memory slot, a removable battery, and also lets you view pictures and videos on its 1.8-inch color display. It comes in 2GB, 4GB and 6GB models for US$199, $249, and $299 respectively. IPO noted the e200s debut at CES.
Just like all of the iPod competitors, the Sansa e200 is at a disadvantage before it even ships at the end of March: It is not compatible with the iTunes Music Store. Instead, it will rely on subscription-based services like Napster, Rhapsody, and Yahoo!.
Mr. Harari, however, sees that as an advantage. "[Apple has] a closed, proprietary system. We work with, as you say, Rhapsody, Napster, Yahoo! and many alternatives. Thats a plus. Apple hasnt had a competing alternative thats just as good. But thats going to change. We are not going to be a 10% player. We will improve our position."
