Showtime Exec: Cable is Spinning Their HD Quality

A Showtime executive has commented on the claim by Cable TV that its HD offerings are equal to or better than DIRECTV, and said that it’s just spin, according to Multichannel News.

"They’re [cable] trying to spin the best story they can in terms of matching what DIRECTV has put up there," said Showtime Networks executive vice president Tom Christie.

Mr. Christie admitted that in five years, everything will be in high definition, However, right now, the cable companies are scrambling for bandwidth to offer HD channels, and haven’t been able to equal DIRECTV’s offerings.

The executive VP of sales and marketing at Turner Broadcasting told Multichannel News about how they must develop more bandwidth in the launch of HD networks. The solution the cable companies will use to get better bandwidth in 2008 is called Switched Digital Video (SDV).

Because most cable companies, bandwidth constrained, can only offer 20 to 30 HD channels right now, they’re having a tough time competing against DIRECTV with 80 HD channels now and a claim of 100 by year’s end.
