Significant Number of iPhone Owners Looking to Upgrade

A large percentage of current iPhone owners may be ready to make the jump to iPhone 3G when the device launches on July 11. In fact, it looks like many iPhone owners would be willing to trade up even if the new combination iPod and smartphone was priced as high as the original, according to Bloomberg.

Glenn Edens, iPhone owner and Woodside, California, computer analyst, commented "I would wager that half the installed base will upgrade. It’s a pretty low-cost update for GPS and 3G."

A National Geographic employee in Alexandria, Virginia, added, "I’m stoked about the price drop and understand Apple’s desire to get the iPhone into as many hands as possible. I would pay the price I paid last year again if I had to do it over -- it’s been worth every penny."

TMO forum members seem to agree. A forum poll currently shows that over 30 percent of current iPhone owners will make the move to iPhone 3G, and an addition 21 percent will upgrade if they get a discount for trading in their current iPhone. It also shows that 36 percent have been holding out and the 3G model with be their first iPhone purchase.

Not everyone, however, is ready to rush out on July 11 and pay US$199 for Apple’s latest smartphone. The disappointment many early buyers experienced when Apple cut the iPhone’s price only weeks after it was launched is still fresh in many people’s minds, and may make them weary of jumping in as soon as iPhone 3G is available.

Some potential upgraders are worried about potential contract rate increases, too.

Despite potential concerns, it appears that iPhone fever is running high. Hopefully Apple is prepared for what looks to be another high-demand product launch.
