Some Canadians Already Using iPhones
Tuesday, November 13th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Some Canadians are already using iPhones. An unlocked iPhone can be purchased for about CAN$600 and a Rogers SIM card inserted. It all works fine -- for now.
The ability of Canadians to use an iPhone on the Rogers EDGE network has been noticed. In fact, the Toronto-based Social Networking site, N49.ca, has been offering its members a free, unlocked iPhone as prize for member contributions. One a week will be given away.
"Canadians are generally frustrated by the non-availability of iPhones here," said Rick Silver with N49. "So we decided to give one a week away in our contest to promote contributed reviews."
Mr. Silver has noted that Canadians with current Rogers accounts can swap their SIM card into a new, unlocked iPhone and use it in normal fashion. Mr. Silver said he doesnt think thats illegal in Canada, but Rogers Wireless may have something to say about it in time.
Its been reported here that Apple is in discussions with both Comwave for the trademark rights in Canada to the term "iPhone" and with Rogers Wireless, the only Canadian company whose EDGE network would support the iPhone.
Canadian customers pay hefty mobile phone bills, and Mr. Silver, who has spoken privately with Rogers representatives, expects the same to be true, when and if Rogers strikes an agreement with Apple.
