Sony, Apple in Talks to Sell Song on iTMS Japan

Sony Music Entertainment is in talks with Apple Computer to make Sony artists available on the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) in Japan, Sony confirmed said Monday.

Sony Music and Apple are discussing the conditions for the deal, but they haven't decided when iTunes Music Stores will start offering its download service for Sony Music's songs, Sony said in a statement obtained by The Mac Observer. One Sony spokesman said Sony-labeled artists could become available on iTMS Japan as early as this year.

"We are negotiating with Apple over the download business and hope to expand our customer base to iPod users," the statement read. A large part of negotiations will include royalty pricing and how much to charge customers per song. The Japanese version of the iTMS launched with one million songs priced at either 150 (US$1.35) or 200 ($1.80) each. Some 90% of the songs on the new service are priced at 150, Apple has said.

Apple launched its Japanese-based iTMS in early July. Within four days, Apple had sold one million songs on the service, without the help of Sony's music library.

The key driver for digital music is licensing. A deal between Sony and Apple could provide a major boost for iPod sales in Japan. The Japanese market is one of the most challenging in the world, with a large number of competitors and cutting edge mobile phones that are quickly adding the ability to listen to music.

As usual, Apple refused comment on the report to various major news organizations.
