Sony Cuts Blu-ray Player Prices by $100

Sony has cut the price of two of its latest Blu-ray players by $100, the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550, according to Home Media Magazine on Wednesday. They are now priced at US$299 and $399 respectively.

The lower cost model, the BDP-S350 is a Profile 1.1 player which can be upgraded later to Profile 2.0. This price is now less, for the first time, than a Sony PS3, which also includes a Blu-ray player.

Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray Player

The BDP-S550 includes Dolby Digital 7.1 analog outputs and a gigabyte of storage. It also includes DTS Master Audio, xvYCC color and 1080p/24 in addition to 1080p/60. 1080p/24 allows judder free movie viewing and avoids Telecine 2:3 pulldown used in 1080p/60 systems. That premium price is for purists, and in many cases, the visual difference between 1080p/24 and 1080p/60 is undetectable.

Blu-ray technology has met with slow in acceptance in the U.S., at first because of the high price of players and titles, and lately due to economic conditions. While these price drops are welcome, most observers agree that US$199 is the sweet spot for a surge in Blu-ray player sales. With these recent reductions by Sony, that Holy Grail price may not be far away.
