Sony Disconnects Connect Music Service
Sunday, June 17th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Sonys answer to the iTunes Store, the Sony Connect music and video subscription service, will be closing its doors while the company redirects its efforts into providing content for its PSP and Sony Reader products. The division will be phased out over time, and will include the loss of about 20 jobs, according to paidContent.org.
Sony had been attempting to take on Apples iTunes Store with its own subscription model music download service and SonicStage jukebox software.
While Sony was attempting to capitalize on the idea that its service was compatible with a wide range of MP3 players, Connect was designed only for Windows users. It also relied on a music subscription model - a model that has not caught on with consumers despite music industry efforts.
Sony has not stated exactly when its Connect music and video service will officially shut down, nor has it stated what will happen to the music its subscribers have already downloaded.
