Sony Music Made Available for Podcasts
Monday, January 1st, 2007 at 2:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Rock River Communications has licensed selected music from Sony BMG for its Chrysler and Ford clients' promotional podcasts according to a story in the Wall Street Journal published Tuesday. This reflects a change in policy regarding the use of commercial music in podcasts.
Chrysler and Ford will pay a flat fee for the right to distribute the music in the podcasts for one year, independent of the number of listeners. Initially only a few songs will be utilized in the "Chrysler Music Legends" series. The podcasts will be posted on Chrysler's home page as well as the iTunes Store. The Ford series will launch later in January.
The article recapped the arguments in the music industry about this kind of licensing and said, "Many executives argue that it is worth handing over some content to spur consumer interest, while others maintain that the companies erode the value of their product by knowingly allowing it to be freely downloaded and copied."
In a similar context, some music groups have known for a long time that the way to generate attendance at their live performances is to give away samples of their music. In an era of increasing competition for bandwidth into the consumer's digital life, music executives will have to change their approach. This would appear to be one of those changes.
