Steve Jobs Announces YouTube for Apple TV at D
Tuesday, May 29th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
In an interview with Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journals D: All Things Digital Conference, Steve Jobs announced that a software upgrade for the Apple TV, available in a few weeks, would allow the Apple TV to display YouTube content. He also discussed HDTV in iTunes.
"People want to buy a lot of video... wouldnt it be great if you could see YouTube on your Apple TV... its available as a free software upgrade available in a few weeks. Normally I wouldnt announce it early, but hey, its D," Mr. Jobs said, according to Engadget.
The remark came while Mr. Mossberg and Mr. Jobs were discussing the number of TV shows Apple has sold, which will hit 100 million in 2007.
In another part of the conversation, Mr. Jobs affirmed that the entire Mac OS X is in the iPhone. Its simply been stripped of the resource data used in a desktop system like desktop patterns and sounds. "...if you look at Safari its not that big. Its REAL Safari, REAL OS X. We put a different user interface on it to work with a multi-touch screen... its an amazing amount of software," Mr. Jobs affirmed.
Finally, when asked about the downplaying of Apple TV as an Apple "hobby" rather than a business, Mr. Jobs suggested that while Apple isnt selling HD content, "...I think that might change!"
The reference to Apple TV as a hobby came in the context that many companies have tried and failed to make a device like the Apple TV a business. That is, hundreds of thousands of units sold a year, but not millions. Perhaps Mr. Jobs was attempting to downplay the Apple TV a bit in expectation of eventual sales numbers being revealed and in light of much larger numbers expected for the Apple iPhone yet to come.
