Steve Jobs Talks Intel Macs, ‘iPod Killers’

After his keynote address at Macworld Expo last Tuesday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs sat down with BusinessWeek's Steven Levy to discuss the new Intel-based Macs as well as the iPod's runaway success. Regarding the former, Mr. Jobs said that his company wanted to introduce the new computers in time for this June's Worldwide Developers Conference, "but as we got going we thought, 'You know, we may be able to pull this off in January.'"

When Mr. Levy brought up the irony that it took Apple 30 years for its computers to run on Intel processors, Mr. Jobs revealed that he and Steve Wozniak only used the MOStek 6502 chip in the original Apple because Mr. Wozniak received one for free. "I have to say I think Intel has really pulled ahead," Mr. Jobs added.

Addressing the revelation that Apple sold 14 million iPods during the last quarter of 2005, Mr. Jobs said that the total shipped "wasn't enough. We couldn't get enough flash memory, we couldn't get enough of everything [to meet all the demand].

"We had to call the numbers six months in advance," he added. "So we sat around and had some meaningful discussions about what that number should be, and we ended up picking the highest of the numbers."

As for the prospect of a so-called "iPod killer," Mr. Jobs replied: "The problem is, the PC model doesn't work in the consumer electronics industry, where you've got all these companies and some does one thing and another does another thing ... What's going to happen is that Microsoft is going to have to get into the hardware business of making MP3 players. This year. X-player, or whatever."
