TVPredictions Slams Microsoft’s Competitor to Apple TV

Microsoft is expected to launch its own version of a PC to HDTV streaming device, the Media Center Extender, according to TVPredictions on Thursday.
"Called a Media Center Extender (catchy, huh?), the retail product will enable a PC owner to send his video and audio files from the PC to his High-Definition TV. (Microsoft Vista software is required.)," Phillip Swann wrote.
The imminent arrival of this device comes at a time when Forbes called the Apple TV an "iFlop." While Apples less than stellar sales of the Apple TV, according to Forbes, suggest that Americans arent crazy about adding a box to stream video from a PC to an HDTV, Microsoft seems bullish.
"Today there is better networking with 802.11n and more compelling content,” Microsofts Keith Laepple said. [See below.] He thinks things are all different now.
Mr. Swanns reaction was, "Uh-huh."
The launch will include the following: short clips from Discovery, The History Channel and HGTV.
The device will have two versions, the basic model at US$299 and a model with a DVD player for $349. Mr. Swann noted that D-Llink will also introduce the Microsoft Media Extender, but the pricing hasnt been announced. The TV industry observers suggested price: "They might want to start with free. "
