Target Offers $229 Blu-ray Player
Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Target is now selling a Blu-ray player for $229 in an effort to counter Best Buys recent product offerings, according to Home Media Magazine. The Olevia BD-110 is a Profile 1.1 (Bonus View) Blu-ray player.
Target is also selling a range of Blu-ray players, including the Phillips BD-P7200 Profile 1.1 player for $249.99 and the Sony BD-PS350 and Samsung BD-P1500 for $299.99. The latter two are also Profile 1.1 players out of the box, but the Sony can be upgraded to Profile 2.0.
"Our vision is to provide our guests with the ultimate high-definition experience," said Target spokesperson Sonia Paulson said.
Unlike Macintoshes, which tend to appeal to upscale customers, Blu-ray players are in the commodity consumer market. As a result, unlike the Macintosh, retailers and manufacturers do have to lead with price, a tactic that is well known in that market place.
Even so, the industry is seeking a delicate balance. Credit crunched customers will be looking for bargains at Christmas, yet the Blu-ray industry wants to maintain the premium image of 1080p video and advanced sound associated with Blu-ray technology. If customers arent standing in line for US$229 Blu-ray players on Black Friday, prices could be forced even lower in spite of designs and strategies of the Blu-ray industry.
