Tech on the Battlefield
Sunday, August 20th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
The amount of technology available to Americans has of course translated into a wealth of digital assets in Iraq and Afghanistan, as detailed in an Ars Technica article. Thanks to domestic shipping rates charged to GIs overseas and the availability of gear at local post exchanges, many soldiers have everything from widescreen TVs to iPods to computers networked for multi-player gaming sessions.
In addition, two Ars Technica forum members noted that piracy is prevalent in those countries, where American soldiers can buy bootlegged DVDs on the street for as little as US$3 each. Unfortunately, so is theft and carelessness: USB drives containing sensitive data have also turned up for sale by local street vendors after their owners lost them or had them stolen.
While some observers feel that a constant diet of violent movies and videogames may cause soldiers to behave poorly, one of the troops interviewed for the article noted: "Speaking for myself, movies and games haven't really shaped my reactions to traumatic events like bombs going off or rounds getting traded. I don't act in real life like I do in a virtual world, because 1up mushrooms are scarce resources out here."
