Time Warner Moving to Switched Video for HD

Time Warner Cable announced that it intends to change over to switched digital video in order to provide unlimited HDTV capacity, according to MultiChannel News on Tuesday.
The COO of Time Warner, Landel Hobbs, said on Tuesday that they plan to convert about half of its systems in the U.S. over to a switched digital video before the end of 2007. Switched video requires a new set top box. Instead of broadcasting hundreds of channels over the coaxial cable and having the traditional set top box tune to one of them, the entire bandwidth of the cable is dedicated to one HDTV channel at a time.
Mr. Hobbs admitted that DirecTV has been doing a better job of advertising its new HDTV offerings. "Shame on us because we haven�t really done a good job of marketing [HDTV]," Hobbs said at a conference in New York Monday.
Cable companies have been at a disadvantage delivering HDTV on traditional cable due to bandwidth constraints. Knowing this, the satellite carriers have been adding satellites and HDTV channels aggressively. Switch digital video is the cable industry’s answer to that challenge.
