Times Columnist Remembers Yesteryear’s Apple Death Knells
Wednesday, September 20th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
"Whether they stand alone or are acquired, Apple as we know it is cooked. It's so classic. It's so sad." So declared a research analyst quoted by The New York Times in January 1996 and remembered by Times columnist David Pogue in a Wednesday blog post.
"Nowadays," he wrote, "Apple is a media darling. The critics like the company's direction, and so does Wall Street." Ten years ago, however, current CEO Steve Jobs had not yet returned to the company, and the media was filled with predictions of the company's imminent demise. Fortune magazine even said in February 1996: "By the time you read this story, the quirky cult company...will end its wild ride as an independent enterprise."
How far the company has come since then. Read more in Mr. Pogue's blog. Thanks to Macworld UK for the link.
