Toshiba Inching Closer to Killing HD DVD
Sunday, February 17th, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Toshibas HD DVD format appears to be one step closer to the grave now that the company is holding meetings to determine the video disc formats fate. The company said that although it is reviewing its HD DVD strategy, no decisions have been made yet, according to the Associated Press.
An unnamed source added that a board meeting to officially decide on whether or not to continue pursuing HD DVD could come as early as Tuesday.
Toshibas HD DVD has been floundering against what has emerged as the more popular Blu-ray HD video format lately. The majority of the movie studios are supporting Blu-ray over HD DVD, big name movie rental services Blockbuster and Netflix are in the Blu-ray camp, and big box retailers including Target, Best Buy and Wal-Mart all support Blu-ray over HD DVD as well.
Consumers favored Blu-ray players during the recent holiday buying season, too.
The Toshiba Board of Directors will likely vote to cede victory to Sony and its Blu-ray format, finally bringing an end to the next generation HD video format war. Should Toshiba declare Blu-ray the winner, it will likely redirect its resources into its other businesses including flash memory and computer chip production.
