Toshiba Launches Under $200 HD DVD Player for Holidays

As expected, the first HD DVD player to retail for under US$200 has started to appear at Amazon and at electronics stores just in time for the Holidays, according to ars technica on Monday.
Wal-Mart and now Circuit City have joined Amazon in selling the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player for about US$198.
The fact that Toshiba released the player under its name may have been a shrewed marketing decision to cash in on the Toshiba brand and avoid customer worries about cheap HD DVD players from other manufacturers. However, at that low price, it should be noted that the HD-A2 is an older model that is limited to 1080i output.
In addition, the five free movie promotion is bundled. However, the movie selection was described by ars technica as not "the hottest."
Observers of the HD disc format war have said that when the price of the players drops below US$200, consumers are no longer worried about making the wrong choice between HD DVD and Blu-ray, and the HD DVD camps plan to make this strategic move at Christmas has been expected.
