UK Apple Stores May Have Trouble Selling iPhone 3G
Thursday, June 19th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apples U.K.-based retail stores may have a problem selling the new iPhone 3G when it hits shelves on July 11 because employees dont have a way to process service contracts for O2. Buying the new iPhone requires signing up for a service contract at the time of purchases, and Apples employees have neither the access to O2s credit check system, or the training to sell contracts, according to Mobile Today.
O2 is working to fix the problem, but there is no word on if the issue will be resolved in time for the iPhone 3G rollout. "We are currently working closely with Apple to enable them to issue contracts in store. Full details are still to be confirmed," an O2 spokesperson said.
Customers that want to buy their new iPhone in an Apple Store wont be out of luck. They will still be able to purchase a pre-pay plan iPhone 3G, but wont be able to take advantage of O2s discounted prices. The cell carrier hasnt said yet what it will charge for pre-pay iPhones, but estimates put the price around £350.
Apples iPhone 3G will go on sale in 22 countries on July 11, and in over 70 countries before the end of the year.
