UK Retailer: Music DRM is Dying, Sales Soaring

The removal of music DRM has their sales soaring, according to British retailer 7Digital. It’s saving the music business there and EMI is credited with the shift.
Ben Drury of 7Digital told The Register on Thursday that DRM-free music is now outselling DRM’d music by a 4 to 1 ratio.
"It’s MP3, absolutely," Mr. Drury said. "People understand that MP3 works everywhere -- that isn’t true for AAC and certainly not for WMA."
He also pointed to the quality factor. The most popular encoding is 320 Kbps. Others such as Amazon and Apple’s iTunes have also raised their bit rates, now to 256 Kbps.
"By next summer all four major labels will have removed DRM from MP3s," Mr. Drury predicted.
