Universal Music Joins Dada Music Service

Universal Music Group has agreed to offer at least part of its extensive music library through Dada.net, Sony’s iTunes Store competitor. Dada.net offers potentially lower per-song pricing compared to Apple with its 10 song per month download package for US$10, and its MP3-based tracks are also DRM-free.
The announcement puts Dada in a better position to compete with the market dominant iTunes Store. So far, the company’s music selection has been limited in comparison to the iTunes Store, but the addition of Universal Music Group could help it gain some traction.
The service’s music sale system, however, may not appeal to every user. Instead of per-song pricing, like the iTunes Store, Dodo.net charges users $10 a month for up to 15 song downloads -- potentially about $0.66 per track. Unused credits can’t be carried over to the next month, so any leftover credits are lost.
While Dada.net isn’t likely to make a significant dent in the iTunes Store’s marketshare, its DRM-free music deal with UMG shows that the record labels are still embracing their anything-but-iTunes philosophy for copy protection-free music deals.
