Unlimited UK iPhone Data Plan Really Will Be Unlimited

O2, the exclusive carrier of Apple’s iPhone in the U.K., has reversed its plan to offer users an unlimited data plan with a "fair use" cap. When the iPhone launches this Friday, the unlimited data plan really will be unlimited, according to the Telegraph.

Unlimited with a fair usage meant that users could use up to 200 megabits of data network access a month before being capped off. Although confusing, the practice is standard in some cell phone markets.

O2 CEO Matthew Key commented "Customers find ’unlimited with limits’ confusing, plus most people don’t speak in megabits or understand what they equate to. So we’ve taken the decision to remove the fair usage cap so that ’unlimited’ really does mean ’unlimited’ -- this is a market first."

While most of O2’s customers use only five megabits a month, iPhone users are likely to use far more because the combination iPod and smart phone offers an interface that is much easier to use.

O2 and Apple are launching the iPhone in the U.K. on Friday, November 9 at 6:02PM. The handset will be priced at 269, and service plans will range from 35 to 55 a month.
