Unlocked iPhone Traded for Nissan 350Z
Sunday, August 26th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
George Hotz rose to fame in iPhone circles last week for his efforts to unlock Apples combination iPod and smart phone. His summer project paid off on Saturday when he traded the unlocked iPhone for a Nissan 350Z car and three 8GB iPhones.
The teenager spend some 500 hours working to free an iPhone from exclusive AT&T service and allow it to operate on other cell carrier networks. In the end, his successfully unlocked phone was operating on the T-Mobile network.
Mr. Hotz temporarily put the unlocked phone up for auction on eBay, but joke bidders drove the price up over US$99 million, and the auction was pulled.
Mr. Hotz traded his unlocked phone to Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell, a company that sells cell phone parts and reconditioned used cell phone batteries. The three 8GB iPhones will be given to the other team members that helped Mr. Hotz with his unlocking project.
iPodObserver.com editors Bryan Chaffin and Jeff Gamet discuss this development in Saturdays episode of the Apple Weekly Report podcast.
