Variety: Blu-ray Could Win HD Battle
Wednesday, January 9th, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
The two remaining studios that support HD DVD, Paramount and Universal, could switch soon, instantly ending the HD disc format war, according to Variety on Wednesday.
According to the report, it has been confirmed that Universals commitment to backing HD DVD exclusively has expired. As previously reported here, the story also mentioned that Paramount also has an escape clause allowing it to back out of its HD DVD support if Warner Home Entertainment does the same.
"Neither studio is ready to throw in the towel immediately, however. Universal is committed to a series of promotions for the [HD DVD] high-def format in coming months, and Paramount has said its current plans are to keep supporting HD DVD, which it backed exclusively in August," Variety said.
While the two remaining studios decide the fate of HD DVD in the coming months, retailers may be in a position to force the two studios hand. Retailers have never been keen in carrying two confusing HD titles, and pressure from them may force Paramount and Universal to make decisions as soon as they can legally do so.
Also, Warner plans to continue releasing HD DVD titles through the end of May, 2008. As a result, the HD DVD format will linger on for a bit longer unless Toshiba makes a formal announcement first.
