VoIP Coming to iPhone
Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Global IP Solutions revealed on Tuesday that it is bringing its GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile technology to Apples iPhone, enabling application developers to create real-time voice over IP applications for the combination iPod and smartphone. The news means that developers will be able to add voice communication features that dont rely on cell carrier networks to their applications, but they will be limited to Wi-Fi connections since companies like AT&T arent interested in potentially losing talk time revenue to their wireless data networks.
According to Global IP Solutions, its technology could be used to develop Wi-Fi based person-to-person communication applications, add multi-person chats to iPhone-based games, and more. The company also stated that applications based on its GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile technology can be distributed through Apples App Store.
Company CEO Emerick Woods commented "With GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile, we are providing the capabilities that turn voice into IP packets so they can be transmitted via Wi-Fi, making it easier for applications developers to come to market quickly with integrated VoIP applications."
Thats good news for iPhone users that have been waiting for VoIP applications that dont require jailbreaking their handheld so they can add applications that Apple has not approved or authorized for the device.
