Wal-Mart Dumps HD DVD

As if there aren’t enough nails in the HD DVD coffin already, Wal-Mart added its own on Friday when it announced that it would be transitioning to exclusive support for Blu-ray movies and players. The big box retailer plans to phase out its HD DVD offerings by June in all of its Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores.

Gary Severson, Wal-Mart’s senior vice president of Home Entertainment, commented "We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases."

The news that the single largest DVD movie reseller in the United States is turning its back on HD DVD is akin to a death-blow to Toshiba’s high definition movie format. Without Wal-Mart on its side, there are substantially fewer retail locations for consumers to purchase HD DVD products.

Toshiba and its HD DVD partners have suffered several setbacks over the past few months as the majority of the movie studios voiced exclusive Blu-ray support, movie rental companies like Netflix and Blockbuster went Blu-ray, and other major retailers including Best Buy and Woolworths threw in with the Blu-ray camp, too.

Word surfaced earlier on Friday that Toshiba may be planning on scuttling its HD DVD format in the next few weeks. With big names like Wal-Mart backing Bluray, that announcement may come even sooner.
