Wired: Zune is Doomed
Sunday, July 23rd, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
The list of features expected to show up in Microsoft's Zune music players may be long, but they won't be enough to keep the iPod competitor from being know as the "iClod," according to Wired. The music player is doomed to the same mediocrity that many of Microsoft's other products have attained.
In the article, Eliot Van Buskirk says "The MSN TV experiment was a bust, Microsoft was quickly forced out of the wireless base station business, and its webcam line isn't anywhere near as popular as offerings from Apple, Creative, Logitech and others. Microsoft's entry into music-player manufacturing is obviously a last resort, undertaken kicking and screaming."
The idea of adding more features to the players isn't going to help, he says. Consumers keep choosing the simplicity and reliability of the iPod over rivals that keep packing more features and complexity into their players. The fact the millions of songs already purchased at the iTunes Music Store won't play on the Zune won't help sales, either.
Mr. Van Buskirk doesn't hold out much hope for the Zune's success. "Given today's iPod-centric landscape, the attendant legacy issues, and past behavior of both consumers and Microsoft, the company's upcoming music player already looks like a loser."
