Woolworths Pulling HD DVD from UK Stores

Another nail has been driven into HD DVD’s coffin now that Woolworths plans to drop HD DVD format movies from its retail stores in the United Kingdom. The retailer made the decision after holiday season Blu-ray sales out paced HD DVD sales by a ten-to-one margin, according to The Retail Bulletin.

Woolworths expects that it will stock only Blu-ray movies in its stores by March, but will continue to offer HD DVD titles through its online store.

Woolworths DVD buyer Steven McGunigel commented "Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD," and that format appears to be Blu-ray.

He added "The main reason is the success of Sony’s PlayStation 3 machine. Because it plays Blu-Ray discs, there are over three quarters of a million homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is no where near that number of HD-DVD players around."

The HD DVD format suffered a serious blow at the beginning of 2008 when Warner Home Entertainment announced that it was dropping HD DVD support and would release high definition titles only in the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray players saw a sharp increase in sales the week after the announcement, but analysts aren’t yet ready to attribute the climb to Warner’s now exclusive Blu-ray support.
