Woz: iPhone Needs 3G
Sunday, March 2nd, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple legend and co-founder Steve Wozniak thinks the iPhone offers the best overall handheld Web browsing experience, but laments the fact that the combination iPod and smart phone does not support faster 3G wireless data networks. Woz shared his thoughts while speaking at the Broadband and Beyond conference in Sydney, Australia, according to ZDNet Australia.
"To tell you the truth, I was disappointed. Half the phones in the AT&T store were 3G already," he said.
Apples iPhone uses the slower EDGE data network for wireless surfing -- a choice CEO Steve Jobs claimed was driven by battery performance.
Despite his disappointment with the slower data connection speeds on the iPhone, Woz said that it is still his favorite handheld when surfing the Web. Other smart phones, he said, couldnt compare to the iPhone experience.
"Not one of them made me feel good about accessing the Internet, browser-style until the iPhone," he said.
While Apple has not confirmed that a 3G version of the iPhone is on the way, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said last November that customers should expect to see that some time in 2008.
