Adobe, Apple Working on Flash for the iPhone

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirmed that his company is working with Apple to bring its popular Flash multimedia platform to the iPhone. The two companies are teaming up to bring the technology to the iPhone because of the technical issues involved, according to Bloomberg.

In an interview at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Mr. Narayen said "It's a hard technical challenge, and that's part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating. The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver."

Adobe has been working for some time on bringing Flash to the iPhone, but so far Apple has rejected the company's offerings. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that Flash runs too slow on the iPhone, and that Flash Lite -- a stripped down version of Flash for mobile devices -- doesn't have enough features to be usable on the Web.

Mr. Narayen didn't say how long Adobe and Apple have been collaborating, or when iPhone and iPod touch users can expect to see Flash on their devices. The fact that the two companies are working together, however, could mean that customers can expect to see Flash support on their handheld at some point.

How much do you want to bet that a lean version of Flash will show up just in time for a third generation iPhone with a faster processor?

In all seriousness I think the best thing to do is to let Flash die and then our PCs would be as Flash free as our iPhones. Now that may be a bit glib, it isn’t Flash so much as it is the people who put it on a website, but I don’t feel that I am alone in my feelings.

The only time Safari even crashes for me is in the Flash Plug-in caused by a nil pointer dereference. This same bug persisted from at least Flash 9 through Flash 10. I hope Flash can be disabled on my iPhone. I have it disabled on my Mac already. I’m finding that I’m only missing out on ads!

I think the negativity towards Flash relates to the indulgent nature of some Flash designers to make these huge SWF files that we all curse to download as they are heinously slow and dont offer much when they do finish loading. I get that. It isn’t Flash that’s bad, as it is poor design.

By no means is Flash “just Ads”. Almost any Video on the net is Flash based. Really going to throw out most of the Videos because of some indulgent Flash sites?  The primary reason I DON’T have an iPhone is that the web function is severly neutered without Flash.

Those of us that design Adobe Flex applications with iPhone style GUI appeal, know that the Flash backbone provides the universal platform. All devices and all OS-es when done right. Good design is the key to that.

I guess it depends where you surf. I haven’t really yet been disappointed by not having a Flash on my iPhones.
