    • Goldfrapp
    • On their latest CD, Supernature, Goldfrapp has put together a successful mix of 1980-era New Romanticism, German cabaret, and T. Rex glam that leaves you riveted even through the album's lulls. It's a great amalgam that sounds current without sounding at all dated.

Another Analyst Predicts $99 iPhone

Another analyst has said that Apple is planning on releasing an iPhone with a price point of US$99 after subsidies, with this newest prediction coming from RBC's Mike Abramsky. In a research note to clients, Mr. Abramsky said that Apple will achieve this goal by offering an iPhone with few features than the current iPhone 3G.

Such a device, according to Mr. Abramsky, would still be an iPhone with multitouch-capable display and the ability to access the Internet (and the App Store), but that it would not support 3G Internet networks, and might have a data cap in exchange for lower data fees. He also said it might have even lower resolution camera -- the current iPhone features a paltry 2 megapixel camera.

The analyst expects Apple to be able to sell 20 million to 30 million iPhones at the $99 price point, but said that it would eat into both current iPod and iPhone sales. Figuring a subsidy of roughly $200 from the phone companies, Mr. Abramsky thinks it would lower iPhone gross margins from approximately 50% to the 35%-37% range.

Accompanying this lower-price iPhone, Mr. Abramsky thinks Apple will release a new revision of the iPhone 3G with video capabilities, a higher resolution camera, and up to 32GB of memory for the same price points as the current iPhone line.

Both new iPhone models would be released in the June or July time frame, and he expects Apple to be able to grab 20% of the smart phone market with this combined iPhone product line.

Call me doubting Thomas. I think it’s just wishful thinking. Where is the incentive to Walmartize the iPhone? How pedestrian and Dell, I mean dull, do these analysts think Apple is?

25 years should tell them that Apple doesn’t go in for bottom feeding. The Shuffle is the one exception and even that nearly disappeared this last go around.

I doubt all of the reports I have read of this updated iPhone 3G. While I think an updated look and capacity are likely, and Video Recording will come to the whole line of iPhones (3g or otherwise), I don’t think we’ll see a resolution update. In order to change the resolution on the iPhone or iPod touch you’d need to update EVERY SINGLE APP in the app store. You could maybe do it with a scaling system, but I think that would introduce alot of problems, especially in apps that rely on precise touch tracking.
Also, as with Tiger’s comment, where is the incentive? iPhone sales are only still strong due to AT&T recent expansion into new markets, and upgrades from the older iPhone. Updating the iPhone in the summer 09 time frame would be a costly mistake, and would alienate customers and developers alike, as their new iPhones now be made obsolete. Now Christmas 09 on the other hand might be a smarter move.
