Apple Claims 500 Million Downloads from App Store, 15,000 Apps Available
Friday, January 16th, 2009 at 4:28 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Apple has claimed to hit to the 500 million download mark for its iPhone and iPod touch App Store. The company also touted the fact that there are now more than 15,000 apps available for download on the App Store, representing a 50% jump in the number of apps available and a 66% jump in the number of downloads in just over a month.
The company announced the news in the form of ads the company placed in USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times, the same way the company announced its last milestone for the App Store.
On December 5th, 2008, Apple placed print ads announcing there were some 10,000 apps available in the App Store, and that users had downloaded some 300 million apps since the App Store's opening earlier in the year.
The previous benchmark touted by Apple came six weeks before that on October 21st of 2008 when Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that 200 million apps had been downloaded from the 5,500 apps then available. Those comments came during an earning report conference call, and Mr. Jobs said at the time, "We've never seen anything like this in our careers."
