Apple Hit with iPhone Display Lawsuit

Scotland-based Picsel is suing Apple for allegedly violating patents for technology used in the iPhone display. The company claimed that Apple is using technology it owns to speed up display rendering, according to Macworld.

The suit claimed that screen redraw speeds on the iPhone would be substantially slower if its technology wasn't being used. The company also said that its technology is being used in over 250 million devices around the world, and that companies like Motorola, Nokia, Palm and Sony Ericsson are among its customers.

The case was file on Picsel's behalf by Nixon Peabody LLP in U.S. District Court in Deleware. Picsel is asking the court for triple damages for for each handheld Apple has already sold.

I’m confused.  Apple has been doing graphics-based interfaces since *desktop* systems were less powerful than the iPhone, therefore “screen redraw speeds on the iPhone would be substantially slower if [Picsel] technology wasn’t being used”?

Apparently they claim some of the things that the render engine does are patented by Picsel.
