Apple iPhone Software 3.0 Media Event Planned for March 17th

The long-awaited and much anticipated media event from Apple has finally been announced for March 17th, one week ahead of rumors of a March 24th event. The company sent out invitations for an event to preview iPhone Software 3.0, a new version of the operating system that runs iPod touches and iPhones.

The tagline for the event is "Get an advance preview of what we are building," and the company will also be discussing a new software development kit (SDK) for developers associated with the new version of the OS.

Full blown iChat (including video?)
More bluetooth options, say working with an external bluetooth keyboard?

Seems unusual for AAPL to adopt “advance preview” tactics for such an announcement.
Might it be the need for regulatory sign off?

I’m guessing they’re following the same pattern as last year: demo in March, with a new beta SDK. Then release around WWDC in June. Hopefully they _won’t_ repeat the same insanity with the NDA, at least once the 3.0 software is released.
