Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.0.1 with SMS Security Fix

Apple updated iPhone OS 3 to version 3.0.1 Friday, a patch that fixes a significant SMS texting security hole unveiled this week by security researcher Charlie Miller. There are not other details yet available for the update, and the Apple Security Updates Web page has not yet been updated with information about this patch.

We will update this article as more information becomes available.

The update can be installed through iTunes. Connect your iPhone, iPhone 3G, or iPhone 3GS to your Mac or PC, select your iPhone in the Devices list, and click the "Check for Updates" button.

That’s a safe bet. Apple will correct all hacks given the opportunity.

I’m sure some will say that Apple pushed this out in response to Charlie Miller’s threat to release the security code information, but we’ve known for weeks that OS 3.1 was coming soon.

NOW if AT&T will get off its proverbial butt and give us MMS before the end of summer. My niece and nephew go back to school next Thursday. Summer is OVER people. Where’s our MMS?

Tiger, looks like Apple is one of thoe “some” that are going to say that they pushed out 3.0.1 (it’s not 3.1) out in response to Charlie Miller demonstrating the security exploit (he demonstrated it on Thursday at Black Hat).

The exploit if you really call it that, wouldn’t have effected anyone had the BIG MOUTH not released how it worked to begin with. As it was I seriously doubt anyone could have really used it for anything anyways. But since he opened his BIG MOUTH, Apple patched it to make sure no one could take advantage.
If the BIG MOUTH was truly into security he would have kept his BIG MOUTH SHUT!!
So it goes, someone wanted attention, whatever. He was probably hoping for a pay out from Apple, but it didn’t happen.

Security through obscurity is not security.

As for evidence that one ws affected by this exploit, you can’t prove a negative, however a positive has been demonstrate by Charlie Miller several times now.
