Apple to Allow iPhone Apps to Talk to Third Party Hardware

Apple announced Tuesday that iPhone Software 3.0 will include a new API that will allow iPhone apps to talk directly to third party hardware. The announcement came during the company's media event previewing iPhone Software 3.0.
According to an Engadget report, Apple executive Scott Forstall offered a couple of examples of such application-to-hardware communication, including a blood pressure application that interfaced directly with a sphygomometer (the pump and armband device used to check blood pressure).
Other examples included a pair of speakers with an iPod dock and a (literal) graphic equalizer for controlling tones, and an FM transmitter where the controls for tuning the device are on the iPhone instead of the device.
The new API will be part of the iPhone Software 3.0, which will be released later in 2009.
