Apple: We’re Hours Away From Billionth App Store Download

All eyes have been on the App Store counter since Apple announced a contest for the billionth download, and according to Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, we're just "hours away" from the lucky download.

The comments came during today's quarterly conference call with analysts when one analyst asked about the mix between paid and free apps at the App Store.

To that question, Mr. Oppenheimer said, "We don't disclose the free versus the paid. But you know, we're just hours away from our billionth download and couldn't be happier with the store's results."

Later in the conference call, Apple COO Tim Cook offered more when he said that, "the billionth download that should occur tomorrow."

As of this writing, the counter sits at 995,185,922, and it has advanced approximately 300,000 in the 90 minutes since the conference call began. That pace is likely to quicken the closer we get to one billion downloads.

The person that downloads the billionth application from the App Store will receive a US$10,000 iTunes Store credit, a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod touch, and a Time Capsule with which to back up those apps.
