AT&T Doubling 3G Network Capacity
Tuesday, April 21st, 2009 at 9:10 AM - by Jeff Gamet
iPhone owners that are tired of dropped calls and weak signals may get some relief soon since AT&T is working to double its network capacity by adding new cell sites to its system. According to Telephoney Online, at least some of that growth will come in the 850MHz wireless spectrum, which should also offer better coverage indoors.
AT&T is also in the process of testing a 7.2Mb/s version of its 3G data network. The current 3G network operates at 3.6Mb/s. If those tests are successful, the company could begin upgrading the network across the U.S. soon, giving users a welcome boost in wireless Internet performance.
Bumping 3G speeds up to 14.4Mb/s, however, isn't likely. AT&T vice president of technology realization, Scott McElroy, said the company will probably skip that step and move onto HSPA+, which offers 21Mb/s speeds.
AT&T's upgrade plans are good news for all of its customers, but even more so for iPhone owners that tend to rely 3G more than the company's other customers.
