China Unicom Lands Preliminary iPhone Deal

China Unicom looks to be a step closer to landing the iPhone in China now that it has confirmed a preliminary deal has been reached with Apple. While the preliminary agreement is a good step forward, it doesn't guarantee that a formal deal will be signed -- but it does bring China's consumers a step closer to being able to buy an iPhone without turning to grey market sales.
China Unicom spokesperson Sophia Tso commented "Discussions are still ongoing, we have not reached any formal agreement," according to Reuters.
The arrangement Apple and Unicom are working on apparently calls for the cell carrier to purchase between 1 and 2 million units at 3,000 yuan (about US$439) each. Unicom will also guarantee at least 5 billion yaun (about US$732.1 million) in annual revenue.
There isn't any word yet on when the companies are likely to formalize a deal.
