doubleTwist Launches Media Sharing Service

Jon Lech Johansen, also known as DVD Jon, is hoping to make media files device independent with his new doubleTwist desktop application. The app is the first offering from his doubleTwist company, and while still in beta, could offer users a way to move DRM-protected content between otherwise incompatible devices.

doubleTwist desktop handles the heavy work of converting audio and video file formats so they can play on any device instead of only the media player they were originally targeted for. Along with format conversion, the application also removes any copy protection that would prohibit the file from playing.

Users can also take advantage of Twist me!, doubleTwist’s social networking application that allows them to share their audio and video files with approved friends. Apple’s iPhone isn’t supported yet, but the company plans to add that soon through a Mobile Safari-based interface.

DVD Jon gained his fame after breaking the copy protection used in commercial movie DVDs, and then later for breaking Apple’s FairPlay copy protection scheme used in media purchased at the iTunes Store.

doubleTwist desktop is available now as a free download for Windows XP and Vista. A Mac OS X version should be available some time before mid-year 2008.
