Gefen HDMI v1.3 Fiber Extender Extends HD Signal 330 Meters

Gefen released Tuesday the HDMI v1.3 Fiber Extender, a device that allows you to extend your HDMI v1.3 display signal up to 330 meters (roughly 1000 feet), including 1080p full HD signals.

The device uses six lasers to serialize the HDMI v1.3 signal through a single cable, and works with Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and set top boxes with an HDMI v1.3 output.

Current Apple TV units also support HDMI v1.3 (at 720p), but as it hasn't been tested, there is no official word that it will work with an Apple TV.

Gefen is aiming the product to those in the presentation or entertainment professions that need to be able to send an HD signal from a device to a display that needs to be far away, say at the other end of a concert hall, club, or mega-conference room.

The company said that an IR back channel can be sent over CAT-5 cable, providing an "efficient method of local control." An RS-232 port is also provided.

The HDMI v1.3 Fiber Extender is priced at US$1,499, and comes with Gefen's standard, two-year warranty.
