Google to Let Developers Charge for Apps on Android Market
Monday, February 16th, 2009 at 6:12 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Google announced Monday that it would begin allowing developers to charge for application offered through its Android Market for Android-based applications. The move comes after many critiques said that the lack of any ability for developers to make money for their Android apps was sending developers to Apple's App Store.
Google's Android Market boasts some 800 apps for its mobile phone platform after several months of availability. That's more than the 500 apps that Apple's App Store had at its launch, but it is dwarfed be the more than 15,000 applications the company based of in January of this year.
Developers from the U.S. and the UK will be able to upload their apps with an end-user price through the existing publishing engine. Though UK developers will be able to upload their apps, for-fee apps will only be available initially in the U.S., with other countries added in "coming months."
Payments will be handled through Google Checkout. Unlike Apple, Google will not be taking a cut, at least not initially. The company plans to offer the same 70% dealer cut that Apple offers, but the remaining 30% will be offered to wireless carriers minus transactions fees.
