iPhone 3G Connection Issues May be Chip Problem
Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Some iPhone 3G owners are complaining of poor and dropped connections, and the cause of the problem could be related to chips used in the combination iPod and smartphone. The chips in question likely come from Infineon Technologies and may suffer from issues that cause the iPhone to perform poorly on 3G wireless networks, according to MarketWatch.
Nomura analyst Richard Windsor commented "We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain Infineon is the 3G supplier."
If so, that could be a problem for Apple since a firmware update wouldnt likely fix the issue.
So far, Apple and AT&T seem to be dealing with iPhone 3G connection issues on a case-by-case basis, indicating -- at least from the companys perspective -- that the problems arent wide spread. Should the issue turn out to be bigger than Apple and AT&T are letting on, it could turn into a headache for Apple, especially if the company has to start replacing handhelds in large numbers.
