iPhone Due in 20 More Countries on August 22
Monday, July 21st, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apples third quarter earnings report on Monday revealed more than record breaking revenue with the announcement that the iPhone 3G will launch in an additional 20 countries on August 22. The second generation version of the iconic iPod and smart phone combo first hit the streets on July 11 in about 20 countries around the world.
Demand for the iPhone 3G has been high since its launch, and in many locations inventory is limited at best. Despite the current iPhone inventory crunch, Apple CFO Tim Cook thinks production is on track to meet demand even with the pending August roll out.
Company executives gave investors and analysts only part of the story, however, and did not confirm which countries will be included in the August launch.
Apple suffered from launch day headaches when customers waited in long lines while the company worked to fix server issues that prevented purchases and activation. Buyers also complained about stability issues with the new MobileMe service and congestion on the App Store, Apples iTunes-based service for purchasing iPhone and iPod touch applications.
Assuming Mr. Cook is right, customers in new and current iPhone 3G markets will likely have an easier time getting their hands on Apples smartphone in the coming weeks. Hopefully the company has worked through its server issues, too, so the August launch will go smoother than the July launch did.
