iPhone Not as Popular at 3GSM Conference
Monday, February 12th, 2007 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple's iPhone may be popular with consumers, but some smartphone makers aren't taking to the new entrant into their market. Speaking at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said that Apple would likely struggle to produce the same success it experienced with the iPod, according to Forbes.
In an effort to help keep customers from switching to the iPhone after it is released in June, Nokia is releasing new handsets with multimedia features that the company hopes are good enough in the eyes of consumers. The move for phones that are "good enough" is in part because Mr. Kallasvuo acknowledged his company can't match the iPhone feature for feature, or on the "cool factor."
Palm CEO Ed Colligan isn't exactly enamored, either, and sees the iPhone and similar devices as fad designs. MarketWatch reports that he said his company will continue to focus on Treo smartphone devices with "reliable applications and great functions."
According to Mr. Colligan, business users are looking for functionality over form, and that often battery life suffers when form takes center stage. "Our customers want a battery that lasts all day. We may lose some sales on day one to some trendy designs, but we have 14 years of experience making small computers and we will not compromise," he said.
Despite the negative comments, both Mr. Kallasvuo and Mr. Colligan feel the iPhone will ultimately be good news for the smartphone industry. Mr. Colligan commented "I think it's signaling that the phone business is shifting toward more converged devices. That can only be good for us."
