iPhone Parts Teardown Reveals Biggest Winners

Analysts are already taking the iPhone 3G apart to see who the biggest financial winners are. Infineon, Broadcom and Triquint are a few.

W. Blake Fisher with Stifel Nicolaus pointed out that Infineon "scored a new power management socket" for the phone portion of the unit in addition to a low-noise RF amplifier. Infineon also supplies the Hammerhead II GPS chip in partnership with Broadcom. Triquint "garnered more content that expected" in supplying three power amplifiers.

Mr. Fisher also noted that Toshiba supplied the NAND memory in the unit he took apart.

Gary Mobley with Piper Jaffray said that Broadcom is a big winner, with parts worth about US$5.25 in every iPhone 3G, twice their contribution to the iPhone 2G.

Craig Berger with Friedman Billings Ramsey noted that Marvell supplies the Wi-Fi chips and that Cambridge Silicon Radio supplies the Bluetooth subsystem. However, he concurred that Infineon is "the biggest winner."

These relative contributions are important for the stock value of the suppliers, and with Apple having sold a million iPhone 3Gs over the weekend, even a few dollars worth of parts can quickly add up for the various suppliers.
