iPhone Sales Likely to Top 10M in September
Monday, September 1st, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple looks to be well on its way to hitting its end-of-year goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of September, leaving the company with three extra months to push its numbers even higher. So far, it looks like Apple has managed to sell about 8 million iPhone and iPhone 3G models based on the calculations of TMOs Apple Finance Board (AFB) forum members, which puts the combination iPod and smartphone on track to hit the 10 million mark well ahead of Apples goal.
The AFB members have been tracking the International Mobile Equipment Identity, or IMEI, numbers from friends, family, and anyone else that will share, and recording them in a Google spreadsheet. According to the data collected so far, it looks like Apple hit 5.6 million units in iPhone 3G sales on August 30, bringing combined iPhone and iPhone 3G sales up to about 8 million.
Apples original iPhone was available in only a small handful of countries. The iPhone 3G, however, is available in over 40 so far, and Apple plans to be selling its smartphone in about 70 by the end of the year. Assuming the company can keep up the estimated production cycle of about 800,000 units a week, it will likely sell more than its projected 10 million units, which ultimately could put smiles on the faces of Apple investors.
[Thanks to TMOs AFB members for their iPhone tracking efforts.]
