iPod Nano Teardown Reveals New Components, Lower Costs

A teardown of the new Apple iPod nano 3G reveals a completely new internal design, almost no parts in common with previous nanos, and a significant reduction in component costs compared to the previous version, according to iSuppli on Wednesday.
In a document obtained by iPO, Andrew Rassweiler, senior analyst and teardown services manager for iSuppli, reported that, "The changes in components have resulted in significant cost reductions in the nano design, allowing Apple to offer a product that is less expensive to build and that has enhanced features compared to its predecessor." In addition, the new design sports a bevy of fresh suppliers compared to the previous model .

iSuppli’s teardown analysis revealed a Bill of Materials (BOM) for the 4 GB version of US$58.85. For the 8 GB version, it was US$82.85. The BOM estimates only covers the component costs and does not cover manufacturing costs, software, intellectual property, accessories, packaging or research and development costs.
"The BOM of the new 4 GB iPod nano is 18.5 percent lower than the US$72.24 direct materials cost of the previous version of the nano released in late 2006. The new product has the lowest BOM of any member of the nano line analyzed by iSuppli," the report said.
